Facebook's first move towards the metaverse

Facebook(or should I say Meta?) recently launched Pacman community on Facebook Gaming and it looks really interesting, here's why:

  1. Unlike normal pac-man, this would allow players to design their own maps and share it with the world (and play in multi-player mode), plus you can spectate others.

  2. Streamers will be able to invite viewers to play the game along with them in real time.

My Take

Pacman is a relatively simple game, so it acts as a brilliant building block for the experimental ideas like custom level design, playing along side your favorite streamers. While these ideas are not brand new. Stadia, (google's cloud gaming service) promised to bring similar play along feature with games like NBA 2K and some AAA titles way back in 2019 but unfortunately the idea is yet to be realized, thus simpler and smaller games could be a better way to approach the same.

In case you have seen Meta's presentation on their vision for the metaverse, there is a lot of visible overlap with the ideas shared in that video and this game, hence I believe its probably their first major step towards the Metaverse.

That's it from my side, let me know your take on the metaverse in the comments section or on our twitter handle @kinetechblog
