OnePlus fans had a nerve-wracking 2021 as the brand seemed to have taken one too many missteps off late with high level integration with Oppo in terms of R&D and Software.
In late September last year, OnePlus announced its plans to integrate OxygenOS and ColorOS to create one single UI for both Oppo and OnePlus phones, which angered OnePlus fans. OxygenOS had an appeal to it that ColorOS never had, and differed fundamentally in the approaches they took, and for the users it meant a drastic change in the way their phones worked.

However, after massive community backlash OnePlus CEO Pete Lau posted on the OnePlus forum about how ColorOS and OxygenOS will remain separate entities. He remarked how they only aimed to share a common codebase to allow for more rapid and stable updates, but renew efforts to make OxygenOS 13 a lot more closer to stock android, just like the earlier versions of OxygenOS.
"Our software philosophy for OxygenOS has always been to offer users a light and clean experience that is close to stock Android and oriented towards usage globally. With OxygenOS 13, we want to deliver an experience that long-time OnePlus users will be familiar with while ensuring it upholds hallmarks of OxygenOS, like a fast and smooth experience, burden-less design, and ease of use..." - Pete Lau
