Samsung and Huawei used to be the only manufacturers that developed custom silicon for their devices under the names Exynos and Kirin, but off late, many more manufacturers have dipped their toes into developing custom chips for their devices. While companies like Google have delved into developing custom SOCs for their devices, Xiaomi, and now, Vivo, are starting things off with custom ISP's or Image Signal Processors.
Hu Baishan, Executive Vice President at Vivo, reportedly confirmed the V1 ISP in a conference today, adding that it would debut in next month’s X70 series. No details were furnished at the moment, but we expect the V1 ISP to help improve the camera performance in challenging scenarios like low-light, after considering what the Mi Mix Fold’s Surge C1 chip did to that device.
Companies like Google have maintained their edge on Camera performance whilst using out-dated sensors by tightly integrating the processing algorithms with the sensor, and with more companies following suit this should mean better imaging capabilities on a larger variety of phones (read Qualcomm is shivering in their place).
