Google's Chrome OS has always been resigned to lower powered 2 in 1s and laptops, however the Search Engine company has decided to offer Chrome OS to users of other devices.
Chrome OS is Google's take on a desktop operating system built around the Chrome browser. It can run certain Chrome OS apps and all Google Play Store Apps natively.
Through the Chrome OS Flex program, Google allows users to load up their PCs and Macs with the latest version of Chrome OS for free. Chrome OS Flex will allow you to turn your old Windows or Mac device into a Chromebook for a faster and more modern experience. As Google notes, it is a “free and sustainable way to modernise devices you already own.”
Chrome OS heavily relies on cloud services, promising to be easier on system resources. This allows it to run smoothly even on old and outdated hardware, hardware that on Windows might be unbearably slow. If you use your PC for productivity mostly, Chrome OS should fill your needs and would be a great alternative to use on lower powered machines for a smooth experience.
Chrome OS Flex's early access program is currently live and can be accessed here.
