Historically, OnePlus has taken in the footsteps of Oppo, often using the latter's designs to model their own phones. However, in 2020, OnePlus announced that they would merge their R&D efforts with Oppo, and now, with an announcement made today, OnePlus has announced that it will “further integrate” with Oppo.
The company announced the decision on the OnePlus community forum, with co-founder Pete Lau acknowledging earlier efforts to merge several OnePlus and Oppo teams.
"...we have integrated a number of our teams together with OPPO to better streamline our operations and capitalize on additional shared resources. After seeing positive impact from those changes, we’ve decided to further integrate our organization with OPPO." - Pete Lau
The co-founder confirmed that, while their operations are being consolidated, OnePlus will still operate independently. He also stated that this merger would result in a larger number of frequent and stable software updates for OnePlus devices. This is good news to OnePlus customers as the company's latest devices have been plagued with Software Update issues.
"As it pertains to software, OxygenOS will remain the operating system for global OnePlus devices outside of the China market,” a company representative told Android Authority in an emailed response to questions.
We hope this merger results in a change in direction for the company, as they seem to have lost their focus off-late.
